Boys Hockey
The Pine City Area Dragons Boys hockey team is sitting on top of the Two Rivers Conference for the third straight season. The Dragons celebrated senior night last night with a dominating 6-2 victory over their rivals from Mora/Milaca last night.
Things started really slow for Pine City after giving up a power play goal early in the first period. Pine City headed to the first intermission trailing the Mustangs 1-0. The second period was a much different story.
Pine City came out firing on all cylinders scoring five goals in the second period. The scoring tirade started with a huge save by Alex Laven. The Mustangs star player, Gavin Orr, got loose behind the Pine City defense and found himself wide open in front of Laven. The sophomore goalie sent Orr's shot away with ease and kicked the puck over to Logan Johnson who gave an outlet pass out to Jan Zahradka who finished off the play with a back handed, top shelf goal for the Dragons. This tied the game at one a piece and was the game changer for Pine City.
The Dragons would pour in four more goals in the period. Kyle Weiner, TJ Roth, Gabe Westbrook (first of season), and Tryston West all scored second period goals for the Dragons who headed into the second intermission leading 5-1. Pine City would polish off the victory in the third getting a goal from George Miller and giving playing time to seniors Beau Steele, Isaiah Gonyea, and Andy Gallik.
The Dragons are now Two Rivers Conference Champions for the third-straight season. This is quite the feat for Pine City considering it had been 16 years since they had won the conference before this run started. The Dragons are 16-5 on the season and are in the middle of a nine-game winning streak.
They have a week off now before taking on Becker/Big Lake on February 1st.
