Tigers and Eagles Fall in Sub-Section Championship Games

Girls Basketball

When the Rush City Tigers and St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders meet, it is a game that you don't want to miss. And this year's Sub-Section Championship game did not disappoint.

The Crusaders and Tigers traded leads back and forth throughout the entire first half and Rush City went into the halftime locker room leading 26-23.

The second half was very similar with both teams trading leads again. St. Cloud Cathedral eventually pulled away into their largest lead of the game leading 53-45 with 3:55 to go. Rush City would not go away, and Cathedral did not hit their free throws late in the game keeping the Tigers in it.

The game was centimeters away from going down as one of the greatest endings in girls basketball history. Shawna Mell hit a NBA-range three-pointer with six seconds left to bring the Tigers within 3 points 60-57. Rush City would then turn around and steal the inbound pass. The ball would end up to Elena Herberg who launch a game-tying three as time expired. The ball banked off the backboard and was halfway down before it popped back out.

The Tigers suffered just two losses this season, both of them to St. Cloud Cathedral. The Crusaders advance to the section 6AA championship game for the second time in three years.

The East Central Eagles also fell last night in the Section 5A Sub-Section championship game. The Eagles gave #1 Seed Belgrade-Brooten Elrosa a run for their money being tied at the half 26-26. East Central would fall 54-42 and take second place in the Sub-Section.
