Jaguars Finish Season With Consolation Championship

Boys Basketball

The Hinckley-Finlayson boys basketball team had a weekend to remember in the Twin Cities taking home the Class A State Tournament Consolation Championship. Technically, this means a 5th place finish for the Jaguars. But there are many in the basketball community that would argue the Jaguars were the 2nd or 3rd best team with an unlucky first draw.

Hinckley-Finlayson started as the #4 seed and lost a tough battle to the eventual State Champions Russell-Tyler-Ruthton. The Jaguars were in the game up until the last few minutes when the Knights pushed out to a double-digit lead and eventually won 87-70.

This loss immediately took Hinckley-Finlayson out of the running for a State Championship, but the Jaguars still had a mission to end the season on a high note. They started the consolation tournament with a dominating victory over Mahnomen-Waubun 88-66. The Jaguars took an early lead and kept the Thunderbirds out of the picture for the majority of the game.

Then on an early Saturday morning from Concordia University, the Jaguars played their 3rd game in three days. The early morning and busy weekend was not an issue for the Jaguars as they knocked out Rushford-Peterson 56-49 bringing home the Consolation championship and finishing in first place.

It was a great final weekend for senior Travis Visser. Visser had three great performances landing himself on the Class A All-Tournament Team. Travis Visser also scored his 2,000th career point in the final game of his career.

This was the first-ever trip to the State Tournament for the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguar Boys Basketball team and they gave the many fans that attended, listened, and watched something to remember.
