Pedestrian Killed by Vehicle on Highway 61


A pedestrian was killed on Highway 61 near the Napa Store south of Hinckley on Thursday night.

In a press release from the Sheriff's Office, Pine County 911 received a call at 9:51 p.m. of a car versus pedestrian collision. Sheriff's Deputies, State Patrol, and Essentia Health responded to the incident.

The victim is identified as Kristian Bartel age 36. Bartel was transported to Sandstone before being transferred to a Duluth Hospital where the victim was declared dead later that night.

The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Drug, alcohol, or phone use are not being considered as a factor in the incident.

This incident remains under investigation by the Pine County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol.
