Braham mayor proposes partnering with Isanti County on roundabout project

Braham mayor Nate George and the Isanti County Board discussed potential partnership opportunities between the city and county at Tuesday's county board meeting.

George discussed Braham's efforts to earn a regional designation for the city's Pleasantview Park, which is included in Isanti County's bikes and trails master plan from 2017.

"We're looking for ways to promote our city and get us on the map to draw more attention and traffic," George said.

George also brought up the potential for a roundabout at County Road 4 and Highway 107.

"In previous conversations with MnDOT, they have agreed that would be a good potential location for a roundabout," he said.

The mayor said the county was looped into partnership discussions about the feasibility of a project due to the location being an intersection of a state highway and a county road.

"The goal would be to increase not only traffic safety, but pedestrian safety," George told the board. "That's a primary pedestrian crossing for our schools."

Commissioner Bill Berg suggested George meet with county engineer Justin Bergeson to determine the viability of a roundabout.

"My curiosity of a roundabout there would be that it's very close to the railroad tracks," Berg said. "Is that a place you can even put a roundabout because of the amount of room and size needed, and then traffic flow with the railroad track a hundred feet away."

Board chair Alan Duff said the county has a "strong desire" to work with Braham on the efforts, contingent on availability of the county's staff and parks and recreation board.

"We're big fans of Braham," Berg said. "It's a great community, and we want it to thrive."
