Braham Police Department warns residents about recent scam attempts

The Braham Police Department is warning of recent scam attempts targeting the city’s residents.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, residents have reported being contacted by someone claiming to be a Braham employee, church, or business owner.

The caller will claim they need gift cards to be purchased for a charitable purpose.

According to Braham Police Chief Kevin Stahl, there is no single scam being used. He recommends only making purchases with people or businesses physically known to you.

"It is important for people to realize that anytime a person, company, or government agency asks for payment via cash, a gift card, apple pay card, or any other none bank issued bankcard it is most likely a scam," Stahl said in an email.

He also said scam cases are tough to resolve with a conviction due to often leading to offshore suspects.

"I would also recommend that anytime a person is contacted by a business that they do business with calls and asks for money, ask them to mail you the request, invoice, bill, or statement," Stahl said. "They should not provide any information about their contact information."

The police department reminds residents that no city official would ask for gift cards to be bought, and not to follow through with any suspicious phone calls or texts.
