The Bluejackets made their way to Pine City Friday evening.
The first period seemed like a feeling out process. Neither team was able to get on the board despite there being three penalties. Pine City grabbed back to back penalties and did a great job keeping the Bluejackets from scoring on two possible power plays. But Cambridge-Isanti did an equally good job of keeping the Dragons away on their power play opportunity.
Both teams turned up the heat in the second period. The Bluejackets were able to get on the board first with two goals from Fin Overby. It seemed like they had any and all momentum going in their direction. But the Dragons forced things to fall their way and were able to grab a penalty for another power play chance. The Bluejackets again kept them out of the back of the net. But shortly after the power play expired McCoy and McCall Leger worked hard to keep the puck in the offensive zone and their hard work payed off. Gavin Broz scored to cut the deficit to one. Neither team was able to score in the rest of the second period.
Pine City managed to hold onto the one point deficit. With how much pressure the Bluejackets were getting on offense, the Dragons were thankful Aaron Rootkie was seeing the puck as well as he was. At the halfway point of the period the Dragons had the man advantage, but C-I made it seem like they were on the power play with how much they had the puck near the Dragons net. That pressure soon broke through for the Bluejackets as they managed to get two game sealing goals before the buzzer from Luke Pierson and Caleb Wisen for a 4-1 win.
Pine City fell to 6-6 on the year but beat MLWR on Saturday to improve to 7-6 on the season. They will play in Mora on Tuesday as they battle their rival the Mustangs.
Cambridge-Isanti also sits at 7-6 on the year and will host Monticello on Thursday in a section matchup.
