Chisago Lakes Defeats Cambridge-Isanti in High Scoring Affair

Chisago Lakes hosted Cambridge-Isanti on Friday night.

The Wildcats got off to a fast start, getting out to a 14-0 lead thanks to Braxton Bender-Ehlke and Kellen Missner rushing touchdowns. The Bluejackets offense struggled much of the first quarter, but after giving up two scores their offense played with some urgency. Their third drive ended up in points on a Tayton Westphal pass to Peyton Coplan from 11 yards out to make it a 14-7 game at the end of the first quarter.

It didn't take the Wildcats long to score in the 2nd quarter, less than 2 minutes in and Bender-Ehlke punched it in from 1 yard out extending the lead 21-7. Chisago was on a roll on their first three drives, but that came to a screeching halt. As they would be held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half. Meanwhile, C-I's team was only just beginning to heat up. Their next two drives would end in scores, Laike Solomonson found Emerson Droubie from 15 yards out and Westphal ran one in himself from 11 yards out to bring them within 1 of the Wildcats. Before the half the Wildcats had one more opportunity to try and extend their lead. But a fumble would give the ball back to C-I and their torrid hot offense with under 1:30 to go before half. Unfortunately, they were unable to get into any bit range for a field goal chance. The score was in favor of the Wildcats 21-20.

After the half it was ALL Chisago Lakes. They would score on their first drive of the 3rd quarter on another Bender-Ehlke rushing touchdown, putting them ahead 27-20 after the PAT was missed. Their defense forced a turnover on downs and gave it back to their offense, and Missner would put another touchdown on the board making it a 34-20 difference at the end of the 3rd.

The Bluejackets offense struggled to get going, as they turned the ball over on an interception, which gave Chisago great starting field position. And it didn't take long for the Wildcats to turn the interception into points. This time Missner threw it to Reese Nasvik from 18 yards out for the touchdown. Cambridge-Isanti needed anything to go there way as the game felt like it was quickly getting out of reach. But a strip sack forced by Marcello Cardoni gave the ball back to the Wildcats. Chisago knew their run game was doing all the work, so they got a look at their passing game. And it would pay off in another touchdown, this time Missner found Blake Siefert from 55 yards out pushing their lead to 48-20. It wasn't an easy catch though, he had to make the grab off the tipped ball.

With the game in hand the Bluejackets could've easily just gave up, but they refused to go down without a fight. On their final two drives of the game they would find the endzone. Coplan would score the teams first points of the half on a 12 yard rushing touchdown. Then on the final play of the game Solomonson found Jacob Henderson on a 27 yard passing touchdown, but it was too little too late as the Wildcats won 48-33.

The Wildcats move to 2-0 on the season. They will travel to Plymouth Mn on Friday to battle Providence Academy.

The Bluejackets drop to 0-2 on the season. Their schedule will do them no favors as they play powerhouse Andover on the road on Friday.
