Dragon Girls Basketball 12-1 at Halfway Point

The Dragons girls basketball team has officially hit the halfway point of their season. Head Coach Ted Hasz recaps last week’s games:

The Dragons go 2-0 last week. 12-1 record half way through the regular season.

Pine City 75

Isle 27

The Dragons visited conference foe Isle on Tuesday, January 14th and came away with a solid victory. "The kids came out and did what they needed to do to secure the victory." Pine City jumped out to an early lead which they never relinquished. "We were able to set the tone once again with our defense." "We feel like, no matter how well we are shooting on a given night, that our defense should remain consistent." Pine City was able to hold the Huskies to 13 points in the first half and 14 points in the second half. "We were able to give all of our kids some good minutes, which is important as a team needs to keep creating good depth as the season goes on." The two freshmen, Sophie Lahti and Kloey Lind came up with 13 and 10 rebounds apiece. "We have really been stressing rebounds the last couple of weeks so it was nice to see those totals." In the scoring column, the Dragons had 8 different kids score. Ellie Hasz had 27 points, 5 rebounds and 6 steals. Lahti had 14 points to go along with her 13 rebounds. Lily Wilson continues to play very steady basketball and finished with 12 points and 7 assists. Alaina Steele had another good game with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Kloey Lind had 6 points to go with her 10 rebounds. Ashley Faur had 3 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Meredith Kolling and Maddie Berglund each had 2 points. Kolling added 5 steals as well.

Pierz 57

The Dragons had their second road game of the week and came away with a huge section win in Pierz. "We started the game playing some great defense and a 7-0 lead which stretched to 18-5." Pierz then went on a run and tied the game at 22 before the Dragons pulled away a bit right before half time to take a 30-24 lead to the locker room. "Pierz matches up well with us size wise which forced us to find some different ways to score." It was not a good shooting night in general for the Dragons. "We had a lot of good looks at the hoop and we had a hard time getting them to fall. Some of that credit definitely has to go to Pierz." The Dragons never gave up the lead in the game and built a 17 point lead with about 5 minutes to go in the game. "We felt we played pretty well overall. We need to rebound better and most nights we shoot the ball better." Ellie Hasz had a big night with 28 points including 5 three pointers. She also had 7 rebounds and 4 steals. "Ellie has been playing at a very high level the last couple of weeks. She has played fast and strong on both ends of the court." Sophie Lahti had a big second half and finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Lily Wilson had 11 points 3 assists and 5 steals. "Lily continues to do a great job of running the show for us." Ashley Faur had 8 points and 3 rebounds. "Ashley has been good on both ends of the floor. Her length on defense is a difference maker." Alaina Steele had 4 points and 6 assists. "Alaina continues to distribute the ball well and find our open shooters." Meredith Kolling had 3 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. "We also had good minutes from Makenna Nelson and Kloey Lind, who both went in and played good defense and took good care of the ball. Those performances don't always show up in stats but they are huge for team success."

"We are now half way through the regular season. We have many little details to shore up to be where we want to be at playoff time, but we are proud of the kids for what they have accomplished so far and we are excited to see how much better we can become."
