Practice is underway for the Pine City Dragons girls softball team who is coming off a 3-14 season last year. The Dragons struggled throughout most of the season only picking up wins against East Central and Ogilvie and seeing their playoff journey end in the first round.
Head coach Jena Dennis has bigger plans for the Dragons this season. Dennis is seeking out a top two finish in a strong conference and the Dragons are hopeful for a first round playoff game.
Pine City will look to the four returning seniors to leadership. Coach Dennis said, "This year I have 4 returning Seniors: Kaitlyn Ballou will be a returning infielder either 2nd or Shortstop. Josie Toman is returning to the outfield as well as back up pitcher, Alayna Campbell will be returning in the outfield as well, and Timber Michaud will be in the infield either 1st or 3rd base to start out. Our Juniors this year are also all returning to the Varsity Line up. Genoa Gregg will be our returning catcher, Annabell Johnson will be returning as an outfielder and back up catcher, Haven Spachalla is returning as a 2nd baseman, and Carla Wimmer as a 3rd baseman. We also hope to have Keyara Berube join us in the infield soon."
The team's motto this year is "The only thing fair in life is a ball hit between 1st and 3rd." Right now, the team is just hoping to get outside. With the late spring we are having, the teams will be practicing indoors for several more weeks that makes getting ready difficult.
The Dragons open up the season (weather pending) on Tuesday, April 10th at East Central.
