The Pine City girls basketball team hosted the #3 team in the state last night, Proctor.
The fans packed the gym for this top 5 matchup. As soon as the game started the Dragons scored. The Dragons quickly built up a nine point lead over the Rails. Proctor took a timeout which proved to be key. After the their timeout, the Rails fought back and went on a 16-7 run to tie the game late in the 1st half. The Rails ripped away all momentum from the Dragons, and before long took the lead. Pine City had some untimely turnovers and couldn’t seem to find a rhythm, and the Rails took full advantage. Proctor went into halftime with a 28-23 lead. Lily Wilson went without a single point in the 1st half. The 2nd half started with each team failing to hit their shots. Minutes later Alaina Steele would change that, as she hit on a long wide open 3 point shot. Both teams went back and forth scoring before the Dragons started to hit on all cylinders on offense and their defense suffocated the Rails shooters. Ellie Hasz took over for the Dragons on offense as she couldn’t miss but was also distributing the ball very well. Before long the Dragons regained the lead and started to build on it. Pine City couldn’t be stopped and when the buzzer sounded they had completed the comeback victory 62-50. Ellie Hasz lead the team with 24 points followed by Sophie Lahti with 14, Alaina Steele with 10, and Lily Wilson with 9.
Pine City moves to 21-1 on the season. They will host Onamia on Thursday in an effort to capture the conference title.
