Foley Captures Section Win over Pine City

The Lady Falcons hosted Pine City on Friday night.

Both these teams came into the game looking to improve their section standings as the new year began. Each team came in with some momentum having won their last game.

As they game started, both teams had their defenses playing lights out, but it wasn't long before the first basket was made, and then the scoring was poured on. Early on the two teams kept it close, answering each others scores and trading the lead. It felt like a game where whoever can make the first stop could win the game, and this was close to the case. Foley's defense stopped Pine City from scoring and it helped them launch an 8-0 run. The Falcons had showcased their dominance and it seemed as if the Dragons had no answers. Part of the reason for the run was turnovers, coming by way of the full court pressure the Dragons were getting. But Pine City has yet to shy away from a tough game, they persevered and although they didn't match that same run, showed Foley it was still a battle. The Falcons continued the pressure defensively, which caused more turnovers and their offense capitalized on most of those opportunities. This helped them to a 51-39 halftime lead.

Foley opened up the 2nd half with a 9-0 scoring run extending their lead to nearly 20. The Dragons would end the run but momentum was heavily on the Falcons side. Pine City's struggles with the full court press continued and turnovers and missed opportunities offensively began to wear on the team. As frustration mounted for the Dragons the Falcons were flying high. Foley had built a nearly 30 point lead and it seemed like they were going to run away with the game. But as the great Lee Corso would say "Not so fast!", Pine City was going to go away easily and in what seemed like in the blink of an eye had turned the game in their favor. And before long they had shrunk their deficit and were within only a few possessions of tying the game. The Dragons forced Foley to use a timeout and try and counter what they were doing. And Foley did just that, finishing the game on a 12-3 run to put the game away and win 95-75.

Both teams certainly will have things they want to work on going forward, but have to be impressed and encouraged by what they saw.

Pine City's schedule has no breaks and they're right back to a gauntlet on Tuesday at Braham.

Foley will play late on Monday at Legacy Christian.
