Foley played Sauk Centre on Saturday.
The Falcons made the trip to the campus of the College of St. Benedict for the section quarterfinal matchup on Saturday. They were the first of four games at the arena. Both teams wasted no time shaking off the nerves of a playoff game. But Foley had a small advantage over SC, they had already played and won a road playoff game. The Mainstreeters were able to score first and get to an early lead, but the Falcons were not going to be outdone as they were quick to answer. While Sauk Centre did hold an early lead but Foley kept it close. But late in the half turnovers were an issue and SC was able to take those and turn them into points. Another thing that allowed SC to pull away late was there 3 pointers, they hit 7 of them in the 1st half and most of them came just before half. This put the Falcons behind at half 35-19.
Foley came out of the 2nd half with some new life, although SC did have a good start, Foley was able to slowly and methodically work momentum back in their favor. Down by over 20 early in the half, that momentum allowed Foley to strike and cut their deficit down to 10. Now it felt like all the Falcons needed was one more score and they were bound for the comeback. Sadly, the SC defense once again created turnovers which they turned into points in a hurry pushing the lead back to 20. But Foley didn't make it this far to just give in, the battled hard and went on a small run. But that run wasn't enough and SC was able to win 68-48.
The Falcons season ends sooner than they'd like but they have to be proud of how hard they fought against the #1 seed. They will return almost everyone to next years team.
But it is sad to see the seniors go, Adelyn Rudnitski and Kaitlyn Latterell, and we wish them nothing but the best in whatever they do next.
