The Kanabec County cannabis committee shared recommendations for the county’s draft ordinance at Tuesday’s board meeting.
Community health director Kathy Burski said the expected timeline is to hold a public hearing on the cannabis ordinance on December 17th, with the measure to be enacted on January 1st.
The draft ordinance has a cap of two cannabis retail registrations, sets minimum buffer requirements for locations, and allows retail sales between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. seven days a week.
Kanabec County Sheriff Brian Smith said it’s easier to set a more restrictive ordinance and potentially scale back than vice-versa.
"It's always better to start strict, and if you decide that you want to go, 'hey, let's ease off on that,' we can do that later," Smith said. "But it's way harder to start soft and go hard."
Burski also discussed following Mora’s city ordinance to limit the number and size of signs advertising cannabis.
