A Kanabec County landlord has been charged with two felony-level counts of mistreating animals and one count of animal cruelty for allegedly poisoning cats on his property.
According to the criminal complaint, a retired veteran told authorities he believed his landlord was poisoning cats that lived around the Union Street building on July 20.
The veteran said he was working with the Veteran’s Association in attempts to rehome the cats, and noticed a rapid decline in their health.
His landlord, identified as Blaine resident Kevin Halverson, was allegedly unhappy that he was taking care of the cats.
The property manager informed a deputy that Halverson approached him and asked for his help to poison the cats.
He said that, after declining, he witnessed Halverson put antifreeze in a trailer the cats crawl into and confronted him about it.
