Mille Lacs traveled to Rush City on Tuesday night.
Both teams came in not having lost a game in the conference all year. Which made this the Great River Conference Championship game!
Both teams were getting the jitters out early in the 1st set. But once both teams settled in the action ramped up. Big hits, blocks, aces and hustle plays would have been enough to break any instant replay system. The teams were back and forth from the start of the set and continued throughout nearly the entire set. The Tigers were able to pull away late to grab the 25-17 set victory.
Now the 2nd set was another action packed one, but not so much early on. Rush City had taken and early lead and built on it. But Mille Lacs was not going to go down easily. The Raiders had fought back and forced a few mistakes from the Tigers. Eventually the Raiders had come all the way back to not only tie the set, but also take the lead. Late in the set Mille Lacs lead 23-21 and were trying to finish off the set. A timeout was called by Rush City hoping to shift momentum away from the Raiders. It proved to be a key timeout, cause after the Tigers scored 4 straight points to win the set 25-23.
The Third set got off to another even start, when one team scored the other got the point back and kept it close. But again it was the Tigers ability to hold the lead and pull away late in the set that gave them a 25-17 third set win, winning the match 3-0.
For the Tigers the win make them Conference Champions! They finish the regular season with a 24-3 record. They will, no matter which top seed they get, have a home playoff game next week.
For the Raiders this is not the final match of the season. They will play in the Upsala tournament on Thursday to close out the regular season.
