Pine City hosted Mora last night in a Section 6AA battle.
Mora won the tip and scored quickly, but the Dragons wasted no time in tying the game. Much like many of the games the Dragons have played in all season, this game was fast paced. Both teams struggled in the 1st half to handle the ball cleanly and that caused a lot of turnovers. Despite the sloppy play early, both defenses stepped up in big ways. Mora held Pine City from having any open threes and Pine City didn’t allow Mora any easy shots in the paint. Both teams traded the lead multiple times but, going into the half the Mustangs held a one point lead over the Dragons 31-30. The 2nd half was much of the same, fast paced and great defensive play. Mora started to pull away thanks to Ben Wright missing only one of his shots all night. But the Dragons wouldn’t go down without a fight. With 20 seconds left down by three the Dragons had an opportunity to tie the game. The Mustangs almost purposely created an open lane to the basket for Seth Logan, who had no choice but to take the points. With 7 seconds left Mora went to the foul line and hit on one of two shots and the Dragons had one last chance to win. Unfortunately for Pine City, a turnover in their offensive zone ended any chance of a win. The Mustangs get the 63-61 win in Pine City.
The Dragons fall to 17-2 on the season, and with the loss are in jeopardy of losing their #6 seed in the Section playoff standings. Mustangs improve to 14-4 on the season and are hoping their win will help them reach a higher seed in the Section playoff race.
