Mustangs Score Six Unanswered to Defeat Dragons

The Mora/Milaca Mustangs improved to 3-1 on the season on Thursday night after they defeated Pine City Area 8-5. The Mustangs trailed 5-2 late in the third period and then scored six unanswered to pick up the victory.

Trenton Fore started off the scoring for Mora/Milaca at 10:07 in the first period, but Aiden Welch from Pine City tied things up just a few seconds later. Pine City added one more by Seth Linnell at the end of the first period to send the Dragons in the lead heading into the intermission.

After a 3 goal first period the second period flew wide open with six combined goals three of which coming on the power play. Two out of the first three goals were also on the power play. Peyton Smetana and Parker Sell started the scoring for Pine City who lead 4-1 and looked like they were well on their way to picking up their first win of the season. The Mustangs never stopped fighting however as Fore grabbed his second goal of the game and fourth of the season to cut the lead back to two. Sell for Pine City answered again with another goal, his second of the season, and pushed the Dragon lead back to three goals. Pine City led 5-2 with under a minute left to play in the second period and once again looked like they were going to put a wrap on it. It was all Mustangs from there on out as Jagger Steiner and Carter Ashworth scored back to back goals just thirty seconds from each other and all of a sudden it was a one goal game heading into the final period.

After six of the first nine goals came on the power play it looked like the third period was going to see special teams being a major factor. But the teams cleaned up play and played a perfect third period with no penalties. Mora's quick breakout and transition offense allowed them to bring in four third period goals and go home with a victory on rivalry night.

Ben Nordenstrom had 21 saves in the victory. Mora improved to 3-1 on the season and will take on Northern Lakes on Tuesday in their next game. Pine City dropped to 0-3 and they will travel to Monticello.
