A North Branch man has been charged with four counts of criminal vehicular operation after a Saturday crash in Stacy that left a six-year-old in critical condition and injured three others.
According to the criminal complaint, Chisago County deputies responded to a crash between a Volkswagen and Kia sedan near the intersection of Stacy Trail and Falcon Avenue North at about 10:30 a.m.
The Volkswagen driver told deputies his vehicle was struck by a driver traveling at a high rate of speed and fishtailing as he was exiting a Kwik Trip.
A six-year-old passenger was airlifted to Gillette Children’s Hospital, where she continues to receive treatment.
Two other passengers, an adult female and 17-year-old, also sustained injuries.
The Kia driver, identified as Joe Campbell, told deputies a woman was driving the vehicle. The criminal complaint states that evidence from the scene refuted his assertion.
Campbell also allegedly smelled like alcohol. He was subsequently placed under arrest.
The results of a toxicology report are pending, but deputies believe Campbell was impaired by a controlled substance.
He made his first appearance in Chisago County Court on Tuesday.
