The Ogilvie girls basketball team traveled to Pine City on Tuesday night.
The Dragons got off to a fast start, scoring first on a three ball from Mallory Clepper. But then the Lions got their offense going, scoring 10 unanswered points. The Lions did not take many shots from the perimeter but didn't need to as they were passing the ball with precision and find open shots underneath. They were also rebounding the ball very well getting 2nd and even 3rd chances on offense. Their defense was locked in, getting their hands in passing lanes creating turnovers and rarely allowing an open shot. This all aided the Lions in getting out to a double digit lead. But late in the 1st just before halftime, the Dragons starting to get things rolling. Offensively they moved the ball around well creating open shots and also battling through contact to make shots fall. The defense had tightened and Ogilvie found less and less room to move. The Dragons had closed the gap but still trailed at halftime 25-19.
Coming out of the break, Ogilvie wasted no time getting their team in rhythm and extended their lead back out to double digits. Kadence Pierce was on fire, hitting any shot she took while also pulling in a plethora of rebounds. The Lions looked like a well oiled machine firing on all cylinders. While Pine City was trailing there was no lack of fight, it was just one of those nights. They had plenty of open looks from beyond the arc but only made 3 of 32. Their defense lacked no desire to stop the shots but some of the inexperience lead to players being out of position. Both teams finished the game on a little bit of a hot streak on both sides of the ball. But it was Ogilvie who won the game 59-39.
For Ogilvie they get back to .500 on the season at 2-2. The Lions will play Mille Lacs in Onamia on Thursday.
Pine City falls to 0-2 to start the season, but they are still growing and will look much better in a short time. They'll travel up to Aitkin on Friday for their third conference game already.
