Pioske sworn in to fill Mora city council vacancy left by Shepard's resignation

Sam Pioske was officially sworn in to fill a Mora city council seat at Tuesday’s meeting.

In February, he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of former council member Kyle Shepard.

Shepard resigned effective Feb. 27 due to moving out of Mora.

"I thought the house-hunting process was going to take years," Shepard said at February's meeting. "It did not. I was just as shocked as everyone else is."

Pioske previously filled a city council vacancy in 2020, and finished only 17 votes behind Shepard in the 2024 general election.

Mora mayor Jake Mathison said he was excited to move forward with a full council.

"I'm excited to have a full council, and to move forward with this council," Mathison said. "I appreciate all of you."

Pioske's appointment extends until Mora's next general election, which will be held on Nov. 3, 2026, to finish Shepard’s unexpired term, which goes through 2028.

"To call a special election now would be too costly to the taxpayers," Mathison said in February.
