Ribbon-cutting ushers in grand opening ceremony for new Mora High School

Mora Public Schools officially opened the doors of the new Mora High School to the public during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday.

Current and former city and school officials gathered for a grand opening to celebrate the new campus, which has been under construction since groundbreaking in May of 2021.

In a speech, principal Brent Nelson recalled the narrow referendum vote that got the project off the ground in May of 2020.

"On May 12, 2020, we won by 605 votes," Nelson explained. "2,040 yeses, and 1,435 nos."

That referendum vote passed with the project cost at $61.9 million.

Nelson also said the school’s new facilities improve the quality of life for teachers, students, and faculty.

"Finally, our kids don't have to cross a busy street," he said. "Finally, our kids can be in a building that's handicap accessible. Finally, our students don't freeze in classrooms."

School board chair Scott Moe echoed Nelson's excitement about the new school.

"This is our town, this is our community, this is our school," Moe said. "I'm so proud to be a board member and have followed in great footsteps of previous board members."

The old high school will be demolished this fall, and the land will be sold following demolition.

Preliminary discussions about the former Mora High School site were on the docket at Mora's Planning Commission meeting Monday.
