The Kanabec County Sheriff’s office is warning residents about the rise of scams as the new year gets underway.
With tax season starting and Covid vaccines being in high demand, scammers have been targeting more people with phone calls, fake letters and emails. The Minnesota Department of Health reminds residents that legitimate public health calls and emails will be able to provide verifiable contact information and will never ask you for your Social Security Number, credit card number or bank account information.
Kanabec County Sheriff Brain Smith gave some tips on how to stay safe and protect yourself.
"If you didn't expect something, don't click on attachments," said Sheriff Smith about scam emails, "Scammers are getting really good at making things look official."
Smith also suggested to also to be on alert with phone calls from numbers you don't recognize and talk to community members about any potential scams you may come across.
If you believe you have received a scam call or email, please contact your local law enforcement agency or the Federal Trade Commission to issue a complaint.
