Wildcats Fall to Willmar

Chisago Lakes hosted Willmar on Friday night.

The Wildcats came into the game looking to end their 2 game skid against a winless Willmar team.

The Cardinals started the game with the ball. They drove nearly the length of the field chewing up nearly 9 minutes of the 1st quarter clock. The Wildcats were able to turn Willmar over on downs, a Carson Drury sack set the Cardinals back on third down making it a 4th and long attempt. The Cardinals went for it on 4th and couldn't convert due to a blitzing Wildcat defender. The Wildcats were in danger of quickly being forced to punt the ball away after getting into a 3rd and long. But Carson Langevin took the ball 55 yards into the endzone to get on the board first, and after the PAT they lead 7-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Cardinals got the ball back and took a good chunk of time off the clock again but this time their drive ended with a score tying the game at 7. Chisago Lakes next drive couldn't get going the way they hoped and were forced to punt it away. Willmar would again methodically march the length of the field and score giving them a 14-7. The Wildcats got the ball with under a minute before half. They tried to break off a big run to put them in a position to take a shot at the endzone. Sadly, the Cardinals defense clogged up all the running lanes and the half ended.

The good thing for Chisago Lakes was they would get the ball to begin the 2nd half. Their first drive ended in a punt, but their defense made a few quick stops to force a Willmar into a punt. This time the Wildcats drive would take them into Willmar territory. Their drive got them into the redzone but were stopped on third down. They brought out the field goal unit trying to cut the Cardinal lead down to 4, but the kick missed and the ball was back in Wilmar's hands. Willmar once again drove the length of the field and extended their lead 21-7. The Wildcats next drive ended with a Brayden Anderson 21 yard rushing touchdown to pull within 7.

After the kickoff Willmar started in their own territory, and all the Wildcats needed was to force a 4th down. The Chisago defense forced Wilmar into a 3rd and long but this was converted on a long pass play. The Cardinals would convert another big pass play to get into Wildcat territory. As time was running low the Wildcat defense had made a key stop on 3rd down forcing a 4th down attempt from Willmar. Willmar ran a QB keeper off the left side of the line, he slid short of the line to gain. In football when a QB slides, he's marked down as soon as the slide begins, but the ball was spotted a yard forward where his slide ended which gave the Cardinals the 1st down and the win.

For the Wildcats they fall to 3-4 on the season. Their regular season ends at the number 1 team in the state Becker on Wednesday.
